Melatonin is a natural sleep aid. Stimulated by darkness it's a hormone produced in our brain's pineal gland that helps to regulate sleep and wake cycles. Concentration peaks a few hours after dark then slowly tapers off as morning nears. The result is your body's own circadian rhythm. But when melatonin levels are low less of the hormone is released into the bloodstream and restlessness or wakefulness results. Whether you simply can't shut your mind down or just toss and turn trying to find the sweet spot a sleepless night leaves you frustrated and can lead to a disastrous day ahead. Melatonin may also ease symptoms of jet lag by reprogramming your body's natural biorhythms to accommodate time zone adjustments.
